LAUNCESTON is known as the 'garden city' because of its abundance of well established beautiful public and private gardens. Launceston nestles in a wide river valley amid lush green countryside. Attractions include The Penny Royal Gunpowder Mill, which is an imaginative man-made development. It depicts early nineteenth century with streams and waterfalls. Cataract Gorge is well worthwhile visiting, located only a few minutes drive from the city. A 1.6km walk along the face of the cliff ends in the Cataract Cliff Grounds Reserve from where a chairlift crosses the gorge.

| Day 2 - Launceston - Swansea (130 Kms) |
Depart Launceston via the Midland Highway to Campbell Town, where you join Route B34, traveling towards the coast, and then the Tasman Highway to reach Swansea. Your accommodation for the next two nights will be at MEREDITH HOUSE. The drive is approximately 130 km.
SWANSEA is a holiday coastal town popular with locals during summer holidays. It is located approximately 32 km south of the turnoff to Coles Bay and Freycinet National Park - an area well worth visiting for the native fauna and spectacular views over Wine Glass Bay. During your stay at Swansea, we suggest you take an historic walk around and visit attractions such as the Glamorgan Community Centre, built in 1860, Morris' Store, built in 1834, All Saints Church, built in 1871, Gumleaves and the Pioneer Working Horse Museum. A drive to Spiky Bridge, Duncombes Lookout and Three Arch Bridge and beaches would also be worthwhile. |
Full day at leisure to explore Swansea and the surrounding areas. If time permits, we suggest you stop at Freycinet Lodge for lunch, a visit to the Friendly Beaches is also recommended.
FREYCINET NATIONAL PARK this is one of Tasmania's many natural highlights - with abundant bird and animal life, superb scenery and excellent beaches. Freycinet is nature at its best. The pretty resort and fishing town of Coles Bay is the gateway to the National Park. From here you can walk to the white sands and azure waters of lovely Wineglass Bay, or visit one of the park's many quiet beaches.
BICHENO is 43 km north of Swansea and is a very attractive spot. The beaches are covered in incredibly soft silver sand that is unique to the area. Off the main beach is Diamond Island, home to the fairy penguin, which can be reached at low tide. Keep an eye on the time and tide because the behavior of the penguins can be very absorbing and you may find that you have to swim back to the beach. Bicheno was a whaling station and is now a popular fishing and boating spot. There is a sealife centre and bird and animal parks nearby.

Day 4 - Swansea - Port Arthur (185 Kms) |
Depart Swansea and travel via the Tasman Highway through the town of Triabunna to Sorell, where you join the Arthur Highway and travel via Dunalley to Port Arthur for overnight at the COMFORT INN PORT ARTHUR. This drive is approximately 185km.
PORT ARTHUR is a symbol of Australia's 19th century convict system. The settlement operated from 1830 to 1877 as a timber producing sawing station, and later as an industrial prison. After the closure, most of the land and buildings were auctioned off, with new residents renaming it Carnarvon township. Following bushfires in 1895, the old settlement has now been restored and is today, Tasmania's premier historic site. In the evening, you can attend "Ghost tours" where you walk around the settlement with a guide who tells of all the ghosts who still "live" in the area! |
| Day 5 - Port Arthur - Hobart (100 Kms) |
Depart Port Arthur and travel via the Arthur Highway, through Sorell to Hobart where your overnight accommodation is at the QUALITY MACQUARIE MANOR. This drive is approximately 100km.
HOBART is the smallest of Australia's state capitals. It is situated on the Derwent River, one of the deepest harbours in the world. The old city centre, with its wealth of colonial buildings, clusters around Sullivans Cove, backed by wooded slopes rising to the often snow-capped peak of Mount Wellington. Its limited size, rich architectural heritage and beautiful setting make Hobart a delight to explore.
